Helpful Items to Bring To Church for Children

As a mother of four children I often have to pack a huge church bag to keep all of my kiddos occupied and in their seats for the one hour block where we take the sacrament. Listed below are some of the items we've used over the years that cater to autism and sensory processing disorder:

Scratch and sniff books

Touch and Feel books- I really like Usborne and Bright Baby board books

Crayola Color Wonder markers and soft paint sticks-mess free and magical

a disk cushion to sit on

a ziploc bag with homemade goo tightly sealed with duct tape on top

finger puppets

a picture of your family small enough to take to class or a small photo laminated

theraputty with small things hidden inside

wikki sticks

lacing cards- great for fine motor skills

magnets to stick on metal folding chairs

colorforms

sticker scenes- we get ours at Oriental Trading Company

bubbles for nursery

fidgets- the dollar store or OTC is a great place to look

PVC tubing to chew on- hook to a piece of yarn

Grabber XT for oral motor stimming

Crayola Model Magic- it's not messy, this too could go in a Ziploc bag to squish

Seek and find bean bag- we made our own with poly pellets and small items

Gluten free diary free snacks- pretzels and gum are great for chewing input

small candies to reward quiet behavior- we use tic tacs

printed coloring sheets- free online

an oil/water or sand counter

a toothbrush

a sensory brush- we do the Wilbarger technique and joint compressions in church

seek and find books

taggy blankets and sensory baby toys

koosh or gertie balls
